Females take up to 7 days to mature their eggs, using either their own fat reserves or nutrients from a bloodmeal. Then they lay them on the soil surface…
Eggs hatch into soil-dwelling larvae which go through three ever-increasing stages until they pupate to form a new adult midge…
Each female will lay up to 3 batches of eggs, depending on the weather and their survival…
Midge larvae bury a few centimeters below the soil surface & over winter here until emerging as new adults the following spring
