2026 Midge Season Update and Competition!

The 2026 Midge Season So Far…

Spring was right on cue this year leading to a first generation midge peak in early/mid-June. Eggs from these midges would normally hatch and give a second-generation peak 5-6 weeks later but we have been experiencing extremely hot and dry weather could suppress the next wave.

Whilst we might enjoy the nice, warm weather, the midges are not so keen! Midges are very small and will dehydrate very quickly in warm, dry weather and although they hide away in the vegetation to help increase their survival, it means they have fewer opportunities to fly around in search of a blood-meal, required to mature their eggs.

The New and Improved Midge Forecast

As you may know, we recently revamped the midge forecast! We believe it is now more informative and easy to read. Each hexagon can be clicked to give you a % of just how bad the midges are forecast in that area. The new colours act as a heat map, allowing you to quickly see where is safe!

We are working hard on an accessible version for those with colourblindness – this will be coming as soon as possible!

Competition Time!

To celebrate the midge season, we’ve teamed up with Bauer Media across Scotland’s central belt and Nevisport to give one lucky winner a £500 Nevisport voucher to spend on outdoor gear, clothing or equipment, PLUS a fantastic Smidge Survival Kit packed with everything you need to help keep the midges at bay. And that’s not all! We also have 10 runner-up prizes, with each winner receiving their very own Smidge Survival Kit.
