The End of the 2026 Season
Summer was a toasty one!

It was a very warm, humid and dry Summer for most, even in Scotland! The early, mild Spring brought the midges to life earlier than expected. What followed was extreme heat and dry conditions, at least for most of central and eastern Scotland. Although warm, the west coast has had its share of rain. Where much of the country had lower rainfall than usual, the west coast was particularly wet, some areas more than an average year – perfect for midges! We normally expect 2 generational peaks of midges, one in June and another in August but we believe there was a less common third peak this season with the weather conditions playing a huge role.
Now, the midge season is over. Temperatures have been above average but are now dropping and will soon be below zero.
What about 2027?
Weather experts are already warning that 2027 could be the hottest on record. The unprecedented El Niño that is happening now will have a big impact on our weather next year. It’s unlikely to directly trigger an early Spring but we could expect more frequent heatwaves and droughts through next summer – what this will mean for the Scottish midge we will have to wait and see!

An update on the Scottish midge forecast

Upon launching our new and improved forecast, we had over 300,000 visitors to the forecast this season! This shows how valuable a tool it has become over the years. We are passionate about our midge forecast and will work hard to continue improving it over time.
After lots of customer feedback, we launched a new “high contrast” version of the forecast. This should make the map much more accessible to those who are colourblind or have other visual difficulties. We welcome all feedback on the forecast, but we are a very small team so please bear with us.
